Children in developing countries like Cambodia can often be exposed to abuse and exploitation, and some adopt risky behaviours in order to survive. ChildSafe certification is a valuable tool in helping to prevent exploitation and improve the lives of Cambodian children.
“We stand committed as a team to improving the lives of children, so we’re very proud that our staff are all ChildSafe certified,” says Baby Elephant CEO Carmel Tulloch. “While we have always had policies in place to protect children, we felt the opportunity to work with ChildSafe International was extremely valuable in ensuring we do everything we can.”
“This is one of many initiatives Baby Elephant is undertaking to become a leader in sustainable boutique hotels,” Carmel says. “We believe in responsible tourism, equitable employment, sustainable environment and ethical development.”
It is estimated that 26% of Cambodia’s adult population is illiterate and 18.6% of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25/day. The lives of children in Cambodia are also challenging with 36.1% of children working as child labour and 31.4% of children receiving inadequate care. Cambodia is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. (Statistics from SHERescueHome).
Baby Elephant hotel manager Ravy Loch, a young Cambodian who transitioned from living in a rural village into a Buddhist pagoda before working his way into a career in hospitality and tourism, says it’s great that the team now know extra tasks they can do to help children.
“We learnt a lot from the training. It is related to how to help the kids when they need us. And the certificates have been fantastic for our team spirit,” Ravy said.
