Audrey brings knowledge from her 200-hour multi-style yoga training  certification with the Yoga Alliance which she did in India. To help you get to know a little more about Audrey and her background in advance of your next class, we sat down with her for a chat.

What were you doing before becoming a yoga teacher?

I was teaching French and English.

What styles of yoga will you be teaching?

I’ll be teaching gentle Hatha yoga that focuses on individual postures, dynamic Ashtanga yoga that combines a set sequence of yoga poses with rhythmic breathing for an intense body-mind workout, and active, energetic Vinyasa yoga that focuses on the flow between movements and aims to link your breaths through different poses.

The Hatha yoga classes will be especially suitable for beginners, but my aim is to make all my classes accessible – everyone is welcome!

What one sentence sums up your love of yoga?

Yoga is my guide and my inspiration.

What can people expect from your classes?

In the Hatha yoga classes, we will work on both ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ postures, allowing you to re-centre yourself, recharge, and feel more grounded. These classes are designed to relax, replenish and revitalise, and are great for relaxing the mind, releasing tension in the body, toning the spine, and improving overall health.

Ashtanga yoga sessions are intended to build strength and tone the body, developing flexibility and rapidly improving your practice, increasing your stamina level and detoxifying. It can also help with weight loss and concentration. This is a more physical style of yoga, so come along expecting to sweat, challenge yourself mindfully, and feel energised!

Our Vinyasa yoga classes, will focus on improving your posture, releasing stress and tension, and feeling strong and focused. We’ll also develop your muscles and burn calories. This is a style of yoga that’s been developed to address the challenges of modern life – so be ready to move, unwind, stretch, strengthen, and simply let go!

What’s on your bucket list?

I’m living my dream! Right now I’m doing what I love, and sharing my passion with the people around me in a new country that I am getting to love more every day. I’m at a point in my life where all I want is to focus on the here and now.

What are your favourite plant, animal, colour and movie?

My favourite plant is the lotus flower, and my favourite animal is the black panther. I love orange and fuschia, and I’m a big fan of Clint Eastwood’s movies.

What is a cause you are passionate about?

I strongly believe in free education for all children.

Do you have a Siem Reap secret to share with the world?

To see the real Siem Reap, take your bike and go for a ride in the countryside!

What one skill should people practise every day?

I would recommend focusing on sun salutations for physical practice, and for mental benefits it’s worth practising the art of letting go. Of course, spiritually it’s always great to practise kindness towards others, yourself and all beings.

Anything you would like to add?

Namaste!

Gin Cocktail Event | Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel

Despite gin fever unabashedly sweeping the region, Siem Reap has yet to fully catch on. Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel is now raising the bar by hosting the tourist town’s first regular gin-tasting popups. For its  second instalment, the Baby Elephant Gin Appreciation Society welcomes Annemarie, Cambodia’s premier mixologist, to showcase a selection of her work in the hotel’s lush tropical garden environment.

Annemarie is renowned for her international accolades as a bar manager and owner, educator, brand ambassador, event coordinator, bar consultant, and competition judge, all the way from the United States to Southeast Asia. She is one of a new breed of young international entrepreneurs sweeping into Cambodia, also among them mural artist Tamara Venn (of east London fashion notoriety, and whose work appears at the hotel), and Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel partners Ilana Tulloch and Adam Scott, whose previous exploits include Slam Dunk Sandwich Co., a vegan sandwich and burger bar in Jakarta, Indonesia.  Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel has similarly shot onto the hospitality scene in Siem Reap, maintaining a top-five position in the town’s TripAdvisor rankings, largely thanks to a relentless commitment to excellent food, drinks and guest service.

“Despite being a relative newcomer to the hotel scene in Siem Reap, we continue to provide some of the town’s very best food and service – both Cambodian and international,” says Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel’s managing partner and marketing director Ilana Tulloch.

“To attract someone of Annemarie’s calibre is testament to the brand we have been working hard to build, and we’are thrilled to be able to join our guests and community in welcoming her,” Ilana adds.

The Gin Appreciation Society meets at 7pm sharp, allowing attendees to embark on this journey of the palate together, sharing experiences as they explore. A a special menu will be on offer, including a range of gin cocktails and Khmer and international finger foods. The hotel’s regular cocktail and wine list will also be available.

Numbers for the event are strictly limited, and reservations (by e-mail to bookings@babyelephant.asia) are essential.

Temple in Siem Reap - photo by Danielle C

If you could use a little calm and a touch more zen in your busy modern life (who couldn’t!?), here’s how to use your stay at Baby Elephant to tap into Siem Reap’s spiritual heart.

Take a yoga class

Yoga somehow feels like it belongs at Siem Reap, and our little town has no shortage of places to get your pose on, stretch yourself to wellness, and reap the spiritual benefits of mindfulness in the process.

At our Siem Reap hotel, we run a regular schedule of yoga and fitness classes, open to both guests and non-guests, and led by a stellar line-up of travelling and Siem Reap-resident yogis with vast experience from wide-ranging backgrounds. Take a look at our current yoga and fitness schedule here.

Feel the spiritual buzz at Angkor Wat

There’s a reason most visitors to Siem Reap are in town for Angkor Wat – the temples at this expansive, UNESCO-recognised complex are still alive with the spiritual and religious wisdom of the past, and you can truly feel the buzz of this fascinating ancient civilisation.

Angkor Wat, like other ancient sites around the word, is even said to lay along intersecting ‘ley line’ points that form a grid across the globe. These lines apparently mark out where energy is emitted by the earth, which in turn can be harnessed for positive power.

Take a trip to Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Phrom and other famous and lesser-visited temples at Cambodia’s renowned complex – our team can help you tailor your excursion to avoid the crowds, so that you can make the most of the ambiance and spiritual energy, and really soak up the vibe of the place.

Experience a retreat

With all this positive, spiritual energy flying around Siem Reap, it’s the perfect place to take a retreat, and recharge your batteries by escaping the stresses and strains of everyday modern life.

At Baby Elephant, we’ve introduced our Signature Retreats, focussed on helping you achieve wellbeing and balance while exploring Siem Reap’s medieval and modern history and getting a special taste of the Cambodia of today.

You’ll participate in yoga, fitness and meditation classes, enjoy traditional Khmer massage, and be treated to authentically Khmer dishes prepared by our Cambodian chef.

There’s also a visit to one of Siem Reap’s NGO-operated training restaurants for dinner, plus local tours and a trip to the historic Cambodian pagoda at nearby Wat Thmey. It’s all the perfect opportunity to unwind and recharge – click here for more details.

Participate in a water blessing

You don’t get much more spiritual than taking part in an actual religious blessing and, at Siem Reap’s Wat Athvea temple, that’s exactly what you can do. Just a short way out of the city and into the Cambodian countryside, the pagoda hosts the traditional Buddhist practice of receiving a water blessing with the aim of bringing you fortune and good luck.

Accompanied by traditional Buddhist chanting that’s believed to bring good luck, you’ll have water poured over you by monks from the temple. You can then explore the rest of the pagoda in all its beauty, and soak up the natural healing vibe of rural Cambodia.

Learn the art of the lotus flower

The lotus flower holds a special place in daily life in rural Cambodia, and the flower is a traditional Buddhist symbol of determination and accomplishment, in the same way as the flower itself is seen to hold its head above the waters where it grows.

At Siem Reap’s lotus farm – which claims to be the first of its kind in the world – you can discover that there’s more to the humble lotus than you realised. By taking part in one of the farm’s guided tours, you’ll see every step of the lotus’ journey, from harvesting these beautiful flowers to seeing them spun, woven and put to use as fabric or simply as decorative flowers.

It’s difficult not to be mesmerised by the striking beauty and relaxing qualities of this most elegant of flowers – and it’s possible to take home a memento from this sustainably run social enterprise, where the shop sells lotus products ranging from bath salts and balms to fabric, massage oil and necklaces.

Discover meditation and energy healing

Various healing and spiritual wellness centres in Siem Reap help to demystify the art of meditation, and enable you to make the most of it in order to achieve balance and fulfilment in your life.

Spiritual wellness sessions involve both meditation and healing programmes that empower you on your own personal journey, channel your energies and balance your chakras, while also indulging in massage and reflexology to accomplish total wellness.

Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing, dynamic sequence of poses. Also sometimes called “Vinyasa Flow Yoga,” this type of practice involves synchronizing the breath with a continuous flow of postures. The fluid, almost dance-like movements increase flexibility, strength, and stamina, as it calms the mind and improves overall health.

The literal translation of the Sanskrit word “vinyasa” is “to place in a certain way.” It refers to a certain sequence of poses that are performed in a particular order. Today, it also refers to the style of yoga that focuses on breathing in conjunction with body movement.

BACK TO BASICS YOGA WEDNESDAYS 5.30PM

About Your Instructor Melissa Lingo

Melissa Lingo’s classes vary in intensity but the most important thing to her is that everyone feels welcomed and confident during the practice. She emphasizes that yoga is for everyone, and just because you can’t touch your toes or stand on your head doesn’t mean you can’t get the full physical and emotional benefits from the practice. Every body is different, therefore it’s important to let go of comparisons or expectations for what we should look like when practicing and focus instead on how we feel. She designs her classes with an equal desire to share physical postures that build strength and flexibility with yogic philosophy and science to deepen the understanding of what we’re doing on the mat.
